Ingredients (filling)

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1/2 cup coarse browned bread crumbs, unseasoned

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 cup sugar

3/4 cup raisins

1/2 cup shredded/sliced blanched almonds

5 large finely shredded apples

1/2 cup unsalted butter

Ingredients (pastry)

6 sheets phyllo dough

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

cinnamon and confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Method

Step 1

For filling combine butter and bread crumbs. Stir in other ingredients. Set aside.

Step 2

Layer phyllo sheets onto a piece of Saran wrap. Butter each layer as they are stacked. Pile all of the apple filling into the short side of the phyllo. Pick up the edge of the Saran wrap and the strudel will roll itself. Butter the outside of the roll.

Step 3

Bake at 400° for 20 minutes. Lower heat to 350° and brush the roll again with butter. Bake for 10 minutes more until golden. Dust with cinnamon and confectioners' sugar.
