Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup currants
  • 3 tablespoons diced citron (you may find this in an Italian grocery store or in the baking aisle. If not you can use candied fruit peel)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups flour, divided
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Method

Step 1

Mix fruits and nuts with 1/4 cup flour. Cream butter and sugar. Add salt, eggs and molasses. Beat well. Stir in remaining flour sifted with baking soda, cream of tartar and spices. Beat well. Stir in floured fruit and nuts. Spread in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. pan. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Cut while still warm.
